The prospect of going back to work after taking time out to have a child can be daunting. Whether it's after parental leave or once they have gone to school or even flown the nest; whether you are looking at going back to your previous role or starting something new, wouldn’t it be nice to take some time out for yourself to really think things through? To talk to someone who's been through it before, who understands, and has the professionalism and experience to support you through this next big step in your life?
And even better, wouldn’t it be great if you could do this using the inspiration of the great outdoors and get some endorphins in the process? Not to mention the option of bringing your little one along to save you the faff of having to ask favours or arrange childcare..
My aim is to support parents transitioning back to work after having children by offering personalised coaching in a flexible way, totally suited to you and your needs. With an ILM Level 7 qualification in Executive Coaching & Mentoring, and with over 10 years experience of hundreds of hours coaching, I can offer practical strategies and emotional empowerment through walking sessions, ensuring parents feel supported, confident and ready to thrive in both career and family life, without compromise.

If you want to go back to the work you were doing before parental leave, you now have a new thing in your life you have to somehow make room for on top of your work. Will you be able to carry on as before? How will you balance work and family life? Coaching can provide tools and techniques to help with this new juggling act.

Its an opportunity to take a step back from your career and really think about what you want to achieve and how you want to spend your time. There may be that new business idea you've always wanted to try? Or you simply want to explore different options. Coaching can help you clarify so you can move forward with purpose and confidence.

Having had the experience of going back to work after kids, I know it can be a daunting prospect; your self confidence can be low so the idea of either carrying on as before, or starting something new can seem like a mountain to climb. Rambling on Coaching can help you find that confidence by combining over 10 years of ILM level 7 qualified coaching experience with a unique approach personalised to you.

Being out in the open air, with a little physical exercise has two benefits:
1. It helps you with that "blue sky thinking", enabling more clarity, purpose, confidence and perspective
2. It keeps the kids happy! This means that if you want to bring your baby/child along with you then you can because they will be distracted by the big outdoors while we talk about you: we can adapt to your needs

Coaching is about you, and it is understanding that you are the best person to know what is best for you. Sometimes there is a lot of noise in life, which can prevent you from seeing clearly what it is that you want, where you want to be and what your choices are - or if you do know, it can be hard to see how to get there. Coaching gives you the time and space, with gentle structure and direction, to see more clearly and with more confidence, what you want and how to get it, taking into account all of your own unique set of circumstances.
Anytime is a good time for coaching, there are no limits!
But if you've recently had a child, that is a big change in your life. Its a whole new lifestyle, and makes you wonder what you ever did in your 'spare time' before kids! Children can be all-consuming, but there might come a time when you want to also fit something in for your professional self: To get back a bit of what you had before, or to move forward with confidence into something new. When you've taken time out of the workspace, like you do when you have children, you are given the opportunity of a whole new perspective and it can trigger some questioning about what you really want to prioritise in life; what's important to you, what you want to achieve and how you can fit that into your new lifestyle that already feels so full.
Whether you want to work out how you can fit in your previous/existing job and childcare, or whether you want to start your own business from your kitchen table, and everything in-between, now is a good point to really take the time and space to work out properly how that will work for you and your family. You can have it all, its just a question of good planning!
Getting outside and walking along while you talk has proven benefits for our physical and mental health and evidence shows it can improve our sense of open-mindedness, confidence and readiness for challenge. Excellent fellow outdoor Coach, Alex Burn (among many others) has done some extensive research in this field. Key benefits include:
Having spent many an hour killing time by walking the countryside behind my house while my two boys were little, I know the joys of putting little ones into their baby-carriers and taking off for some well earned fresh air - not to mention the peace and quiet that comes when the kids have so much to look at in the fields & woods from their positions of comfort on your back! (or front, or buggy..). I'd like to take advantage of that peace and quiet to let you have some time to think.
With extra long sessions of minimum 90 mins, this ensures that we have plenty of time to build in the faff of babies / toddlers and the interruptions they may bring. I can promise to remain completely flexible and let the little ones make the ground rules and dictate the timings, as they always do, whilst ensuring that we get enough time to talk about you and your needs as both a parent and professional.
If you do have childcare and /or don't want to bring your little bundle along - or indeed if you don't have young kids and just want a coaching session - that's fine too!
As a parent and a professional, I know it can be hard to juggle both of those roles without compromise and/ or guilt. I have two brilliant boys (who are unfortunately too big to stick in a baby-carrier these days), and when I was going back to work after having each of them, I wish I had had someone to help guide me through that process. I found it terrifying to have to slot back into my old job when I'd been out of it for 10 months and my confidence was rock bottom. I felt completely conflicted, with part of me looking forward to some 'grown-up' professional time, and part of me heartbroken to leave my baby at nursery. I wanted to do something different but didn't know what or how, or even how to start thinking about anything other than sleep/milk/nappies. Going back to work was hard, but I believe it doesnt have to be - and with the right support, it can even be better than before.

Having worked in NHS Senior Management roles for nearly 20 years, I know the demands of careers and children. Since qualifying in ILM Level 7 Executive Coaching and Mentoring in 2017, I have coached many people in a wide variety of executive roles, often with some common themes around trying to fit in professional roles and family life. During my 19 years in NHS Management, I developed coaching strategies for the organisation, was a key member of the NHS England Coaching & Mentoring National Steering Group, and built up many hours of Executive coaching for both teams and individuals. I am passionate about equal opportunities, and helping people achieve their goals without compromising what they love in life.

I didn't used to love walking - as a child I used to be dragged round the New Forest in Hampshire, and even across deserts in Egypt when my parents' careers took us there for a few years growing up. I finally 'got' what walking was all about when I lived in the Lake District in Cumbria whilst in my first NHS role and studying for my Masters in Human Resource Management. Now living in the beautiful Chiltern Hills, I still have plenty of opportunity to make the most of the countryside on my doorstep.
